Center for Pragmatic Buddhism

Learn Pragmatic Buddhism at your own pace

Free online courses from the Center for Pragmatic Buddhism (CPB), taught by teachers of the Order of Pragmatic Buddhists (OPB). Our first course is written for people new to Buddhism.

How our courses work

Free to take

Pragmatic Buddhism does not charge for the dharma (the Buddha’s teaching), so our courses have no fee. Gifts pay the costs of running them, such as this site, the Zoom account we sit together on, and the Meetup listings that help people find a sangha. We are grateful for any donation you have the capacity to give. A student who gives nothing takes part on equal terms.

You set the pace

Foundations is written for one lesson a month, and you can move faster or slower. Nothing is locked and there are no deadlines.

Open to anyone

You do not need to belong to a CPB center to take a course.

Questions go to the community

Bring your questions to the Community for Pragmatic Buddhism on this site. A teacher from the Order reads the community and replies within a week.

Practice with others

CPB has sanghas (groups that meditate and study together) in St. Louis, Columbus, and Stirling, Scotland, and online. Meeting times are listed on our Meetup page.

Pragmatic Buddhism reads Chan and Zen practice through American pragmatism. CPB is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in St. Louis, Missouri, and is not affiliated with any other Chan or Zen organization.
